Significance of italian Campaign
Won the Battle of Lodi in May 1796; proceeded to Milan
Won Italy by Feb 1797
Why did Italian campaign weaken the directory
The directory was reliant on the money N sent them back- eg Milan had to pay over 20m francs to Fr states
N also bonded with troops- he promised that they would receive half their wages in silver and gold not depreciated paper money
Campo Formio?

France gained N Italy and Ionian islands; Austria had to support Fr efforts to gain the L bank of the Rhine; formation of Cisalpine republic
Why did Campo Formio weaken the directory?
Nap beginning to seem like his own gov; he elected both executive and legislative bodies of Cisalpine himself
Egypian campaign?
N captured Alexandria in July 1798 and gained Cairo at the Battle of the Pyramids
Avoided Br- unike Directory’s plan; N won by disrupting trade routes rather than physical battle

He won Jaffa but lost half of troops trying to take over St John of Acre Fortress
