A

leukocytes

  • granulocytes (contain granules in their cytoplasm)
    • -> neutrophil
    • -> basophil
    • -> eosinophil
  • agranulocytes (no granules in cytoplasm) [aka mononuclear leukocytes]
    • -> lymphocyte
    • -> monocyte

  • secretes: heparin (anticlotting substance)
    histamin (chemical released in allergic, inflammatory recations)

- increase in number to help body protect itself from allergens

  • first on site
  • strong ‘phagocytes’
  • 6 to 24 hour life span

  • produce ‘antibodies’ (proteins)
