White Blood Cells Flashcards
1
Q
Breakdown of WBCs
A
leukocytes
- granulocytes (contain granules in their cytoplasm)
- -> neutrophil
- -> basophil
- -> eosinophil
- agranulocytes (no granules in cytoplasm) [aka mononuclear leukocytes]
- -> lymphocyte
- -> monocyte
2
Q
basophils
A
- granulocyte
- secretes: heparin (anticlotting substance)
histamin (chemical released in allergic, inflammatory recations)
3
Q
eosinophils
A
- granulocytes
- increase in number to help body protect itself from allergens
4
Q
neutrophils
A
- granulocytes
- primary “soldiers” against bacterial infection
- first on site
- strong ‘phagocytes’
- 6 to 24 hour life span
5
Q
lymphocytes
A
- agranulocytes
- can attack infectious agents directly
- produce ‘antibodies’ (proteins)
6
Q
monocytes
A
- agranulocytes
- destroy debris left after neutrophils attack foreign cells
- can leave blood, to enter tissues to become ‘macrophages’ (large phagocytes)
