Prone
Person lying face down.
Directional Terms Assumption
Assume terms are referring to body in anatomical position, unless otherwise stated.

Inferior
Towards the feet (tail). Also known as caudal.
Anterior
Towards the front. Also known as ventral.
Posterior
Towards the back. Also known as dorsal.

Body Planes
A plane that divides/sections the body so we can see ‘inside’.

Separates the body into right & left parts. The median plane is mid-sagittal.
Frontal Plane (coronal)
Separates the body into anterior & posterior parts.
Transverse Plane (horizontal)
Separates the body into superior & inferior parts. The plane runs parallel to the ground.
Oblique
Does not run parallel or perpendicular to other planes.
Body Cavities
Closed on the outside to provide protection. Contains internal organs/viscera.
Three types of- thoracic, abdominal & pelvic/abdominopelvic cavity.
Subdivisions of the Abdomen
Quadrants (4)
Regions (9)
Used to locate underlying organs.
