Are You What You Eat? Flashcards
Accessory Organs
Primarily glands, secrete fluids into tracts.
Path of Food
Oral cavity
Pharynx
Oesophagus
Stomach
Smal intestine (duodenum, ileium, jejenum)
Large intestine (caecum, colon, rectum)
Anus
Functions of Digestive System
Ingestion, mastication, secretive, digestion, absorption, elimination, etc.
Histology of Digestive Tract
Mucosa: inner layer, secretes mucus.
Submucosa: CT,contains blood vessels, nerves, etc.
Serosa/adventitia: outermost layer, CT, stability.
Mesenteries
Peritoneum (epithelial tissue) which connects organs together & small intestine to back body wall.
Greater Omentum
Connects stomach to transverse colon.
Lesser Omentum
Connects stomach to liver & diaphragm.
Swallowing Phases
Voluntary phase
Pharyngeal phase
Oesophageal phase
Swallowing: Voluntary Phase
Tongue pushes bolts to back of oral cavity towards pharynx (oropharynx).
Swallowing: Pharyngeal Phase
Soft palate (uvula) closes off the nasopharynx. Bonus touches receptors on oropharynx & swallowing reflex moves bolts down pharynx & into oesophagus. Epiglottis overs trachea.
Swallowing: Oesophageal Phase
Plus is moved down oesophagus towards stomach by peristalsis.
Layers of Stomach
Muscularis:
- Outer longitudinal
- Middle circular
- Inner oblique
Submucosa
Mucosa
Rugae
Folds in the stomach wall which allow it to stretch after eating.
Monosaccharides
Glucose
Fructose
Galactose
Disaccharides
Sucrose
Lactose
Maltose
