How Do We Protect Ourselves? Flashcards
Pathogen
A foreign agent.
Lymphatic System in Immunity
Transport system for cells of the immune system & antigens to move around the body.
Physical Immunity Barriers
Skin, mucous membranes, saliva, tears, stomach acid, cilia in respiratory system.
Chemical Immunity Barriers
Histamine, cytokines, complement (stimulate lysis or invading pathogen cells), interferons (anti-viral activity).
Inflammation
Local tissue response to damage. Aims to rid body of debris/invader & prevent further pathogen entry.
Four features: redness, heat, swelling, pain.
Functions of Lymphatic System
Fluid balance, fat absorption, defence.
Lymph Composition
Water & solutes from plasma (ions, nutrients, gasses & som proteins) & cells (enzymes, hormones, waste products).
Returns to circulatory system via veins, essential for fluid balance.
Lymphatic System Disorders
Tonsilitis, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, Non-Hodgkin’s disease, bubonic plague.
