What is cannulation?
A cannula is a flexible tube that is inserted into a vein for the purpose of administering certain drugs
What are some risks associated with cannulation?
- sharps injury
- introducing avoidable infection into the patient
- infusing air into the patient circulatory system
What patient prep is required for cannulation?
- informed consent
- confirm patient details
- maintain privacy and dignity
- patients in a comfortable position
What is the equipment prep for cannulation?
- appropriate equipment
- packaging integrity

When should you wear gloves in cannulation?
If bodily fluids are present or if you have heavily soiled hands or open wounds
When is the venting cap only opened?
When the giving set is attached to a rigid container
How should you fluid check?
- correct type of fluids
- expiry date
- clarity of fluid- should be clear without clouding/particles
- package integrity
What are some common conditions/adverse reactions to cannulation?
- pain at site
- swelling around site
- redness proximal to cannulation site
What is EZ-IO?
The use of a specialist drill to insert a mental tube into the cavity within a one when IV cannulation is not possible or has been unsuccessful
How should you prepare equipment for IO?
- insert packages for damage
- paramedic will prime EZ connect
- select needle as directed by paramedic and open the cartridge and connect to the drill- leave the cap on
- expose the site of choice and clean the area
- prepare infusion of fluids id required
