WEEK 5: 5.7- limbic system, brainstem and cerebellum Flashcards
what is the limbic system comprised of?
limbic lobe and the structures it is connected to, including the hippocampus, amygdala, hypothalamus, olfactory cortex, thalamus
What are the 4 key functions of the limbic system?
Homeostasis -> hypothalamus
Olfaction-> olfactory cortex
Memory -> hippocampal formation
Emotion -> amygdala
Where is the amygdala located?
temporal lobe
What does the amygdala do?
receives multimodal sensory input from its environment and adds an emotional tag to these sensory experiences
What does the amygdala send information to ?
brainstem, cortex, hypothalamus
What can damage to the amygdala cause?
lack of emotion, fear, inability to discriminate between food/non-food and hypersexuality
