WEEK 3: PRACTICAL Flashcards
What two systems can the cardiovascular system be divided into?
- Pulmonary circulation
- Systemic circulation
What is systemic circulation?
A close-looped circuit between the heart & tissues of the body.
What does systemic circulation facilitate?
the transport of oxygenated blood from the left ventricle to capillaries within tissues and deoxygenated blood via small/large veins back to the right atrium of the heart
What is pulmonary circulation?
A closed-loop circuit between the heart and lungs.
What does pulmonary circulation facilitate?
The transport of deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to capillaries within lung and the oxygenated blood via pulmonary veins back to the left atrium of the heart
T or F: blood carried from the heart to the lungs is oxygenated
F: deoxygenated
T or F: blood carried from the lung to the heart via pulmonary veins is oxygenated
T
What does the chest (thorax) contain?
vital organs like heart/lungs, blood vessels, esophagus
What is the function of the rib cage (thoracic cage) and its bones (vertebrae and costae)?
protect the organs and participate in key functions like breathing
The space in the thoracic cavity between the lungs is known as the
mediastinum
What thin structure covers the heart?
Pericardium
What is the tip of the heart called?
The apex
The biggest blood vessel that emerges from the heart is known as?
The aorta
The word pulmonary hints to what structure in the human body?
The lung
Arteries VS Veins
arteries transport blood away from the
What is the function of the superior vena cava
delivers blood towards the heart
T or F, the pulmonary trunk is the most anterior vessel compared to superior vena cava and aorta
T
What are the elephant ears on the sides of the heart called?
Oracles (appendages) (right & left)
The left atrium carries deox or ox blood?
Ox
Right atrium carries Deox
Superior vena cava carries deox or ox blood?
deox
Pulmonary artery carries deox or ox blood
deox
Pulmonary vein carries deox or ox blood?
ox
What are some of the major jobs of blood vessels
- Deliver oxygen and nutrients to tissues & cells
- Remove waste products and CO2
List the order of vessels blood passes through after it exits the heart?
heart -> Large artery -> medium artery -> arterioles -> capillaries -> venules -> medium vein -> large vein -> heart
What two arteries does the brachial artery divide into?
The ulnar and radial arteries
What drives blood flow through the circulatory system?
Contraction of the ventricles of the heart generates a pressure gradient that drives blood flow through the circulation
