Week 4 Flashcards
Explain how Population, Community, and Ecosystem relate to each other.

Population includes all of one species in an area. Community are all of the species in an area. Ecosystem include all the communities PLUS abiotic factors.
4 main characteristics of a population:
- Geographic Distribution 2. Density
- Age Structure 4. Growth Rate
Give a different example of geographic distribution.
* Must be different than any previous example. The area across any land that you can find a particular species. Can be separated by quite a distance.
4 main characteristics of a population:
- Geographic Distribution 2. Density
- Age Structure 4. Growth Rate
Guess then look up the Population Density of a random city on the globe.

* Must be different than any previous example. How a population is distributed. Is this density more or less dense than Cranberry Township?
4 main characteristics of a population:
- Geographic Distribution 2. Density
- Age Structure 4. Growth Rate
Refer to this image to answer the question.

* answers will vary *

Give an example of how one creature may affect growth of a population (bigger or smaller).

Being born, dying, immigrating, emigrating.
Tell me something about this graph….

J curve, exponential growth, Carrying capacity, population stabilizes
Is this example Desinty DEPENDENT * or * Density INDEPENDENT

( > < )
competition: # of a species and # of communities
predation: relationship btwn # prey & # predator
parasitism / disease: relevant events
unusual weather: drought, ice storm, flood, hurricane affect population #s
natural disaster: out of control / random
Let’s play:
Is this example a renewable resource ?
* Can it be replaced in a reasonable amount of time?
Explain reforestation to someone who might not be as smart as you.

Reforestation: process of replacing forests that have been removed.
Can you guess what DEforestation means?
What can be done to combat overfishing?

* regulate the fisherman, facilitate the growth of the fish population (aquaculture), reduce consumption
What are some ways the you can or do conserve H2O ?

* “Skip shower day.” does not count!

Explain Biomass vs. Biodiversity

Biomass is the AMOUNT or NUMBER of creatures
Biodiversity is how DIVERSE (how many different types) or species there is.
Climate Change
Habitat loss / degradation
Pollution
Invasive Species
Overexploitation
Climate Change: the effect of warming over time
Habitat loss / degradation: natural or manmade
Pollution: Lithosphere, Hydrosphere, Atmosphere
Invasive Species: unnatural species
Overexploitation: overharvesting
Explain the saying “You are what you eat ! “

The things you ingest/eat affect your body in various ways.
“Too much of ANYTHING is a bad thing.”
* Bioaccumulation & Biomagnification
