Week 3 H&S Workshop Flashcards
What is a ‘model of care’ in pregnancy care?
- Who is getting the care?
- Who is providing the care?
- How?
- Where?
What are the four main models of care in pregnancy?
- Public hospital maternity care
- GP shared care
- Midwifery group practice
- Private
What factors affect the accessibility of a model of care in antenal care?
- Workforce (supply/demand)
- Funding/billing structure
- Patient demand (cultural/economic preferences)
Outline the public hospital model of antenatal care
Antenatal care provided purely within the public systtem, by midwives and/or doctors across inpatent and outside clinics
Outline the GP shared care model of antenatal care
Care provided by a GP in the community, in collaboration with staff at a public hospital.
GP handles care prenatally until it’s the appropriate time for other hospital staff to take over. And GP also handles postnatal care (↑ continuity of care — aspect of good health service delivery)
Outline the midwifery group model of antenatal care
- Same costs as public hospital
- A single midwife is allocated; doctors only brought in for medical complications etc
- ↓ accessibility since demand > supply
