Aetiology, diagnosis, complications and treatment of pyloric stenosis

  • Aetiology: narrowing of the pylorus of the stomach (part that connects to the duodenum)
  • Diagnosis: imaging (x-ray/ultrasound) +/- blood tests to check for electrolyte imbalance
  • Complications: dehydration, electrolyte imbalance
  • Treatment: surgically treated

Constitutional small baby vs slow weight gain. Corresponding management?

A
  • Constitutional small baby is when the baby is still meeting all milestones, but it small. They may require more frequent monitoring (consider size of parents, ethnicity etc)
  • Slow weight gain is when baby’s gain weight abnormally slowly, even taking into account ethnicity etc. Here, we assess nutritional intake, absorptive disorders, neglect, or excessive caloric utilisation
