What’s an APGAR score? When do we use it?

A

A way of assessing the health of a baby 1 and 5 minutes after birth:
- Appeareance (all white/blue, pink and blue, pink)
- Pulse (none, <100, >100)
- Grimace (no response, grimace, cry)
- Activity/tone (none, some flexion, arms and legs flexed
- Resp (no breathing, weak crying, strong crying)

  • On one hand, may provide more info. On the other, a false result could sway decision making the wrong way
