Week 3 Body Schema and Body Image Disorders Flashcards
what is unilateral neglect
inability to perceive and integrate stimuli and perceptions from one side of the body
unilateral neglect usually involves which side and damage where
left side, and damage to the right parietal cortex.
if you have a right hemisphere lesion, how much left neglect is there
severe,
if you have a left hemisphere lesion, how much neglect is there
minimal right sided neglect.
how do you manage unilateral neglect
increase stimulation to the side of the brain that is neglected, and do bilateral movements in WB
also force them to use neglected side
compensate with visual cueing.
verbal cueing and adapting to the environment (put TV on the neglected side of the chair)
what is somatagnosia
lack of awareness of body structure and failure to recognize how parts relate to each other and the whole body. can’t ID any part of ones body, or another body
how is somatoagnosia managed
provide tactile input, ID body parts, do bilateral activities.
what is right and left disorientation and what part of the brain is damaged
inability to distinguish between the right and left
damage to parietal lobe at angular gyrus
right and left disorientation is a neurophysiological process that requires what higher functions?
visuospatial processing
memory
language
integration of sensory information
right and left disorientation is a component of what
Gerstmann’s syndrome .
what are the 4 components of Gerstmann’s syndrome
dysgraphia
dyscalculia
finger agnosia
right and left disorientation
what is anosognosia
inability to recognize or refusal to accept the pretense of severity of ones own paralysis. denial.
how do we manage anosognosia
its hard, and they will refuse a lot
what are spatial relations disorders
inability to appropriately discriminate the body in relation to two or more objects or directions, inability to detect relationship of object or self to objects in space
what is figure ground discrimination
inability to visually distinguish an object from the background in which it exists or locate an object that is not prominent in the visual array (see things on a cluttered bed, or body shirt)
how do we manage figure ground discrimination
compensation with visual scanning, amplify stimulus and simply or adapt the environments, repeated practice
what is topographical discrimination
inability to perceive the concepts of up down in and out and in from and hard time ID landmarks. can’t get around well
how to we manage topographical discrimination
practice, land maps, mark routes with dots.
what are depth and distance perception things
inability to perceive and judge direction, distance and depth. can’t tell if the cup is full
how do we manage distance and depth perception
specialized glasses, practice and adapt the environment (like taping steps to see them better)
what is vertical disorientation
do not know what vertical is.
neglect is fairly common in people with…
stroke or brain injury
treatment for body schema disorders is a combination of…
remediation and compensation
TF: body schema dysfunctions impact function, independence, mobility and ADLs?
true
