Week 3 Agnosia Flashcards
agnosia definition
inability to recognize or perceive familiar sensory information, even though the sensory system is without deficit
in agnosia, there is disturbance in one of the sensory modes of…
visual, tactile, proprioceptive, auditory and body schema
what is visual agnosia
perception without meaning, and you cannot recognize the stimuli. Eyes work and function fine. can’t recognize familiar colors, objects, can’t name them
what is prosopagnosia
failure to recognize people or faces
how do we evaluate agnosia
rule out sensory deficits and anomia (problems recalling words or names), object recognition test, and visual identification of things
what is anomia
problem recalling words or names
how do we manage agnosia
use real objects, and physical guidance. Also practice discriminating between objects, and compensate with other sensory modalities (do they know what it is by how it feels)
what is auditory agnosia
failure to identify meanings of sounds, and cannot discriminate between speech and non speech sounds
give an example of auditory agnosia
what is ringing? is it a door? fire alarm?
how do we manage auditory agnosia
drilling or practice compensate with other senses. Usually a speech pathologist
what is tactile agnosia
Astereognosis or the inability to recognize objects by handling them (though the tactile sensations are without deficits)
how can we evaluate tactile agnosia
place an object in their hand and have them hold it. Put the object on the tray and ask them to show you which object was in their hand
or Ayres Manual for Perception: (10 plastic shapes in hand, and can they ID it on the chart)
how can we manage tactile agnosia
practice and compensation
agnosia often requires what type of strategies for management
compensation
