Week #3 Flashcards
What are the 3 conditions for natural selection?
Variation, Inheritance, Competition (VIC)
What is variation?
Individuals within a population have different characteristics / traits
What is inheritance?
Offspring inherit traits from their parents
What is competition?
Offspring with traits better matched to the environment survive and reproduce more effectively than others
T/F - Darwin’s Finches are a historical example of microevolution?
True
T/F - Peppered moths are a modern research example of microevolution?
True
T/F - Corn is evidence of microevolution and artificial selection in agriculture?
True
What is fossil evidence for evolution?
The Archaeopteryx
What animals is the Archaeopteryx a cross between?
Dinosaur & bird
Who is the founder of biogeography (evidence for evolution)?
Alfred Russell Wallace
What is biogeography?
As continents collided, species mingled; When continents separated, new species went with them
What is convergent evolution?
Similarities due to similar selection pressures; think similar traits, different forms
Ex. Arctic wolf w/ white coat and Arctic bird w/ white coat
What is divergent evolution?
Animals w/ a common ancestor develop different traits due to different environmental pressures; think similar form, different traits
Ex. Elephant and Mammoth
What are analogous characters?
Similar in appearance and function but not connected through a common ancestor
Ex. Bird wing and Insect wing
What are homologous characters?
Similar in structure due to common ancestor
Ex. human arm, cat leg, bat wing, and whale fin
