Week #1 Flashcards
What are the 7 characteristics of life?
Growth, Development, Reproduction; Energy Utilization; Cells; Homeostasis; Ordered Complexity; Evolutionary Adaptation; Sensitivity; (“GECHOES”)
What are the Levels of organization of Life?
Atoms, Molecules, Macromolecules, Organelles, Cells, Tissues, Organs and organ systems, Organisms, Populations, Communities, Ecosystems, Biosphere
What are emergent properties?
- More than sum of its parts, not additive
- Cannot be deduced by looking at parts themselves
Ex. “Life”
What is the smallest and basic unit of life?
Cells
Inductive Reasoning
uses related observations to arrive at a general conclusion; “bottom up”
Deductive Reasoning
uses a general principle or law to forecast specific results; “top down”
What are the steps of the Scientific Method?
Observe, Question, Hypothesis, Prediction, Experiment, Results
What is a hypothesis?
Possible explanation for observation; must be tested
What is an experiment?
Tests hypothesis; 3 variables; test experiment and control experiment
What are the three variables for an experiment?
Independent, Dependent, Control
What is the independent variable?
condition
What is the dependent variable?
measurement
What is the control variable?
unchanged variables
What is quantitative data?
Numbers; measured; quantity
Ex. length, height, time
What is qualitative data?
Data observed; can’t be measured; quality
Ex. colors, smells, beauty
