Week 2- Nervous Tissue Flashcards
0
Q
What are the functions of oligodendrocytes?
A
They myelinate CNS axons.
1
Q
What are the functions of astrocytes?
A
- They provide structural support
- Uptake excess potassium from extracellular spaces during intense or prolonged neuronal activity
- phagocytosis & scar formation after injury
- isolation of nerve terminals from each other
- regulation of entry of substances into interneuronal space
2
Q
What do microglial cells do and why are they unique?
A
They function as phagocytic cells, have monocyte ancestry and make up less than 5% of glial cells.
3
Q
What are the functions of ependymal cells?
A
- Cilia help move the CSF
- Transport of substances from CSF into brain
- Secretion into ventricles
