What are some emotional impacts to adjusting to post-secondary school?
Loneliness, financial distress, class format, freedom, social opportunities, personal and emotional problems can all impact adjustment to post secondary schools.
In post secondary the most common mental illness is?
Depression and anxiety, more than 1 and 3 first year students report at least one diagnosable mental illness.
Why does Psych not have trigger warnings?
1) From a scientific standpoint, studies that have investigated the effects of trigger warnings are mixed, but they bottom line is they have none to slightly negative impact on overall student well-being.
2) The pedagogical side, the use of trigger warnings may lead to avoidance of course material which impedes learning this material.
Explain chronic disease?
A health condition that persists over time typically for periods longer than three months (HIV, asthma, diabetes).
Explain biopsychosocial model of health?
An approach to studying health and human functions that posits the importance of biological, psychological, and social processes.
Explain Psychoneuroimmunology?
A field of study examining the relationship among psychology, brain function, and immune function.
Explain psychosomatic medicine?
A field of study that focuses on how biological, psychological, and social processes contribute to physiological changes in the body and health overtime.

- Internal causes

- Pleasant emotions roughly 40%
- Unpleasant emotions roughly 55%
- General well-being roughly 48%
What is subjective well-being positively and negatively associated with?
Positively: Optimism, hope, gratitude, and positivity as well as cognitive hope and emotional hope.
Negatively: It’s weakness is resilience so ability to adapt to changes and challenges but if achieved is positively associated with happiness.
what are the 5-resilience factors?
1) coping
2) control and self-efficacy
3) Social relationships
4) dispositions and emotions
5) Stress management
(Coping) Please explain problem focused and emotion focused?
Problem focused = actively addresses the event and better when outcomes are somewhat under control.
Emotion focused = reduce feelings of stress but not as productive as problem focused coping, and the outcome is not under control.
Explain control and self-efficacy?
Perception of control is beneficial and self-efficacy = belief that you can do what is needed to achieve the goal.
Reduce stress, promotes health behaviors.
Social relationships & loneliness leads too?
Cognitive and physical decline, drug misuse and increase mood disorders.
