Weathering And Erosion Flashcards
Denudation
The process of wearing away rock/ soil by weathering and erosion.
What are the types of weathering
Mechanical weathering
Chemical weathering
Types of erosion:
Moving:
Air
Ice
Water
Weathering
Is the breakdown and decay of rocks that are exposed to the weather
Erosion
Is the breaking down of rocks and the removal of the particles.
Example of mechanical weathering:
Freeze thaw action, breaks rocks into smaller pieces
What is scree
The pieces of rock that break off a mountain because of freeze thaw action.
Example of chemical weathering:
Carbonation
Example of a karst region:
Limestone regions
Limestone pavement
Large area of exposed limestone. The joints or cracks in the rocks widen and deepen to for, deep gashes called grikes and the block on top are called clints.
Examples of an underground features:
Caves and caverns
Stalactites and stalagmites
What happens when water/ rivers flow onto bare limestone?
The water being is to dissolve the limestone by carbonation.
