The Atmophere Flashcards
1
Q
What are air masses
A
An air mass is a body of air with its own temperature, pressure and humidity level
- they can change weather over places
- that is why some countries have mixed weather
2
Q
What are fronts
A
A boundary area where 2 different air masses meet
3
Q
Warm front
A
- Develops when warm air moves towards cold air
- the warm air rises up over the cold air
- as it rises it cools and condensation occur
- clouds are formed and this leads to rainfall
4
Q
Describe rainfall relief
A
Occurs when:
- Warm moist air moves in from the sea.
- It hits a mountain range ant the coast and is forced to rise.
- it cools as it rises.
- condensation occurs, clouds are formed and it starts to rain
5
Q
Describe how frontal rains fall occurs
A
Occurs when:
- warm and cold air masses meet at a front
- the warm air mass moves over the cold air mass
- it cools, clouds are formed and condensation takes place
6
Q
Describe how conventional rainfall occurs
A
Occurs when:
- the sun shines on the land and heats up the air above
- the heated air rises quickly
- as it rises, it cools and condensation occurs and it rains heavily
7
Q
Name a warm current
A
North Atlantic drift
8
Q
Name a cold current
A
Labrador current
9
Q
Depressions
A
Is an area of low atmospheric pressure
10
Q
Cyclones
A
Another name for depressions
11
Q
Anticyclones
A
Areas of high atmospheric pressure
