Population Flashcards
What is another word for population cycle
Demographic transition
Stage 1:
High birth rate low death rates, low population due to famine and disease. Eg - very few remote places
Stage 2:
Money is well spent of health care and clean water. Birth rates high. Eg- Egypt
Stage 3:
Social and economic development. People start to have less children
Stage 4:
The country is now wealthy. Family planning. Low birth and death rate. Small population growth. Eg- Ireland
Stage 5:
People have very few children as people are more focused in their jobs. Population starts to decline. Eg- Germany
Why does population increase in recent years
Agricultural revolution: more stable food, less famines
Industrial + scientific revolution: better machinery for agriculture. Better healthcare and medicines which saved more lives.
Factors affecting population change
- Food supply:
- Improved technology: farming has improved, as a result of better machinery
- health: clean drinking water. Vaccinations.
- war: millions of people have died in war which leads to increased death rates
- status of women: hygiene
- education: gives people control of their lives.

Show us the % of males and females in differs age groups
They allow the government to plan where to build schools, hospitals and other facilities
Population distribution

Population density
Refers to the average number of people living in a square kilometre
What are the factors that cause uneven distribution?
Social + historical factors
Resources and terrain
How do resources and terrain affect population change
Soils
Climate
Drainage
Good land for agriculture
High population density problems
- overcrowding
- shortage of clean water
- pollution
- lack of space
Child mortality rate
Is the number of children who die under the age of 5 in a year
