15
Q

How are v shaped valleys formed?

A
  • The river erodes downwards which steepens the valley
  • mass movement causes the sides of the valley to move down-slope into the river
  • this gives valleys their v-shape
  • the materials that fall into the river are then transported off in the rivers load.

Q

Landforms of the mature stage of the river

A

Meander

17
Q

What is an oxbow lake

A

A horseshoe shaped lake found beside a river

18
Q

How is an oxbow lake formed

A
  • By continuous erosion and deposition
  • Eventually the river cuts through the neck of the meander
  • deposition then occurs which leaves the oxbow lake separated from the river
19
Q

Name a landform of the old stage of a river

A

On bow lake

20
Q

What are levees

A

Raised banks of deposited materials found along the banks of rivers

21
Q

How is a levee formed?

A
  • When the river floods, it spreads out over the flood plain. The heaviest material is deposited close to the river
  • overtime and after many periods of flooding this deposition material forms levees along the banks of rivers.
22
Q

What is a dam

A

A dam is a barrier constructed across a river to control the flow or the rise of water

23
Q

Dams in Ireland

A

Dams have been built on a number of Irish rivers
3 dams have been built in the river Liffey
The largest dam traps water behind it which is transported to a reservoir called blessington lake

24
Q

Advantages of a dam

A
  • The ESB station built into the dam generates hydroelectricity (hydro electric power = hep). This is a clean source of renewable energy.
  • Supplies water
25
Q

Disadvantages of dams

A
  • Takes up a lot of land

- Floods are common

26
Q

Which part of the river erodes the banks

A

Youthful stage

27
Q

What does the v shape valley do

A

Erodes banks

28
Q

What are meanders

A

Curves or bends along a river

29
Q

How are meanders formed

A

They are formed by erosion and deposition. Erosion and deposition occur on opposite sides of the river. The continues making the bends sharper.
