Sea Deposition Flashcards
Sand spit
Is a ridge of sand which extends out across the sea and eventually reaches another part of land. Longshore drift moves materials along the beach and when it runs out of energy it deposits its load. It builds up over time and rises above the sea water to form a sand spit. Example: tramore
Lagoon
Is a body of water cut off from the sea. It happens when sand spit stretches across the bay, it eventually reaches across the bay. Lough gill
What is longshore drift?
Moves materials along the beach.
It occurs when the waves approach the beach at an angle. The swans brings the materials up onto the beach and the backwash brings it back down to the sea. This continues in a zig-zag pattern.
Tombolo
A ridge of sand that connects an island to the coastline. A tombolo is formed when a sand split occurs linking an island to the coastline, rather then stretching across to a bay.
How have people tried to control the destructive power of the sea?
Sea walls
Boulders
Groynes
Gabions
Groynes
Low walls built of wood that are built under the ground and stop sand drifting down the beach.
Gabions
Boulders that are in big cages
