Weather Flashcards

1
Q

Temp/Dew spread is significant when < ?

A

2 deg or less

1 deg or 0 deg can still be ok for local flying near Ocean airports (Victoria, Lhr)

Whereas, Super Dry air won’t get any weather except Gusty winds!

Q

When visibility is less than 4miles start thinking?

A

If there is Precipitation…then vis will be even less at higher altitude.

Fly around Snow Showers, like you would the bottom of CB in the summer.

D=V*T (<3nm is time divert)
3/current groundspeed *3600= Secs of vis required right now, Hit Stopwatch!
hrs/min/sec

Q

What wind changes cause a DPS?

A

Loss of Headwind OR
Increase of a Tailwind
Both make a/c fall, go max power!

Q

What happens on clear, cool nights?

A

Ground cools faster than airmass; an inversion of temperature; expect some shear as you transition this area.

11
Q

What is the safe distance to remain from a CB?

A

15nm

Can’t out climb
Harder to deviate 100nm off course
Can barely outrun

Any encounters on ground or air will have severe consequences…

16
Q

How to correct with windshear?

A

Add power, let the nose fall…
don’t try to maintain altitude
You must trade Alt for Ias…

17
Q

Stopwatch number seconds of vis I have… then use what ‘formula’ ?

A

d=v*t
Curr Vis= gps GS * (#Sec/3600)
Units thing per hour via min and secs!

…Easier on Calculator…
Sec/3600 * gs

18
Q

You’re always close to trouble when <XXX sec vis ahead!

A

<100 sec

if currently Flying at a Fast GS then maybe 3nm vis, but if slow then only 1.5nm vis!

19
Q

Which way is a veering wind going?

A

Clockwise
To the right on Compass Rose

20
Q

What is weight of avgas per US Gallon?

A

6 pounds
Usually 100 octane
