Run-up Considerations…

A

Never over loose ground or deteriorating Rwy
Face into wind
Nobody behind me
Once a day is enough…

Maybe ride brakes and do it while ‘moving’ which is a compromise, sometimes better to just ‘bypass’ the run-up to avoid further damage on a bad surface…

Q

I should treat downwind turn or low vis 180 deg turnback as an…

Inside (PA+ ias, altimeter, hdg)
or
Outside turn (using Vmc attitude) ?

A

Inside, as Ground Rush illusion has me pulling back on stick.
Spend more time on instruments for this

Look inside mostly and only ‘glance’ out..

___ deg angle going Upwind
___ deg angle when Downwind

A
11 deg (Groundspeed of 50kts)
5 deg (Groundspeed of 110kts)

6 deg difference in ft/nm terms

Q

Simulated Engine Failures and Driftdown ‘best practices’…

A

Only done over a suitable landing area
Carb heat on prior to intiating procedure

Need to keep the engine warm by clearing the engine every 40secs (about 500’), also ensures eng is ‘still’ running. Always move the throttle slowly, do not ‘jab’ it up.

For any Perfomance testing, only do on a Summer day (less cooling occurs as warm)

Mix cut-off
(never use Mags or Fuel Selector valve)
Throttle Full open vs. Closed
(note different Rod)
Prop out full-coarse (Blue)
vs. Fine being flat against airflow

[Max alt loss 1500’ (3000-1500’) this allows start and time to warm-up slowly prior to re-applying full power!]

20
Q

Upwind side of mountains has?

Downwind side has?

A

Upwind:
Cloud and Rain

Downwind:
Rotors (Lenticular Clouds)

21
Q

Vne is 90% of my airframes Vdf, which means?

A

Flutter free speed; above which is found control reversal and buffeting

22
Q

The severity of an emergency is inversely proportional to?

A

The number of options available (and Time)

23
Q

Maydayx3, Callsign, Position, Nature of failure + Intention

They will ask for?

A

Souls on board and Fuel in Minutes

5 digit lat/long= deg/min
Round seconds to .0 or .5

24
Q

Alternator failure leads to?

A

Total electrical failure…tell atc will not have a radio soon…Tx.

Could be simply due to alternator belt slipping, but I can’t fix that…

I will have battery for awhile…

25
Q

Best Autopilot in the world…

A

Dsy

To keep wings level

26
Q

Realize when your falling behind the aircraft…

A

Waterskiing instead of Being ahead of it!

Reacting instead of Anticipating…

27
Q

Where does the Moon rise?

A

In the East

Keep North Star on your left and your going East
Find it from the bigger dipper to little dipper

29
Q

Nobody ever hit an aircraft by climbing in cloud without a clearance…
What do they hit consistently?

A

The Ground

Just go up sometimes and try to obtain a clearance asap, squawk 7700
Atc can ‘see’ farther than they can hear

Cannot climb into Ice clouds…unless thin

30
Q

Backup Gps planning entails…

A

Actually my iphone+apple watch compass!

+-Turning on and inputing destination wypt on a handheld gps, also know battery status of this unit.

Prep Dead Reckoning heading if final GPS fails (hdg +- drift, distance, time) best side to offset for big features on my Map, write these things down.

31
Q

From Warm to Cold…

A

Look out below

…From High psi to Lower psi…
Look out Below
My old altimeter setting will have me flying lower than indicated

32
Q

Low flying catch-all found in FAR 91.13

A

“No person may operate an aircraft in a careless or reckless manner so as to endanger the life or property of another”

Also follow circuit politics at airfield…

35
Q

Be sure to log all night t/o and landings…to avoid regulation violations…

A

Liability (insurance) in the event of incidents, not being ‘Qualified’ to make the flight.

3 takeoffs and 3 landings within 90 days…best to say you obtained a weather briefing and had a valid medical!

36
Q

Black hole approach occur over which Terrain?

A

Water or Featurless terrain
More pronounced on a Moonless night or in Low vis
Accidents happen following Long straight in approaches

  • Safer to fly overhead at MSA then orbit down when <2nm back only!
*You cannot maintain a constant visual angle descent to rwy from far away, that shit will kill you.
*Best to Have a Vasi available at Destination, anytime lights dissappear…Pull-UP, Pull-UP
36
Q

Turning Downwind at low altitude is more dangerous because…

A

Illusion of adequate ias

When turning from headwind to tailwind, the perceived increase in G/S has pilots pulling on stick, getting slower…closer to stall speed of the turn

  • Winds increase as you climb, so the ‘tailwind’ you pickup is even stronger.
  • In gusty conditions, all changes as you turn downwind will reduce your ias!
37
Q

Should I deploy/retract flaps one Notch at a time?

A

Yes, to id a split flap condition

Most dangerous after takeoff or during a Go-Around
Avoid doing so a very low speed or close to the ground

38
Q

When should I never put flaps out?

A

In a turn

Assymetric condition, you fix by putting them back up!
Full opposite Aileron to maintain control

If forced to land with assymetric flaps then fly approach at Vref +20kts, this requires a longer runway
(My flaps have no interlock)

39
Q

Flapless landing requires how much more runway?

A

50% more
Normal Vref +20kts is safe
Fly it onto rwy, less flare

39
Q

When doing short landing competitions never use the ‘real’ threshold…

A

Pick a point 200’ in as the ‘imaginary’ brick one!

41
Q

Flying a Dme Arc further out and at lower ias is much easier than close in and fast…

A

<10dme is rare
80kts is fine
Fly a series of straight segments
Winds keep shifting as you progress on the arc, consider that…

42
Q

Forced landing into Mountains, procedure…

A

Vg
Best area…
(less trees, less slope, less boulders)
Prefer to Land into Wind
Squawk 7700
Mayday call
Elt On
STOGE

Keep enough energy to Flare uphill or fly into trees at Vref

Not time for scared, time to fly the plane, it’s a good glider!

43
Q

120ft/min ROD is how many FPS touchdown?

A

2 feet per sec

44
Q

Some USA airports provide GCA approach to Non-Precision step down Minima, but what can you find at military airports?

A

Declare and emergency then use…military
‘PAR’ with a 3deg g/s
(use during Emerg IMC 200’ 1/2sm vis)

Fly my headings very accurately
Fly 3deg rate of descent (Pitch attitude, config, power)
I will be at 80kts so I require 400fpm ROD for 3deg GS
Canadian Military?

45
Q

Am I aloud to land on a long smooth dirt road in the desert?

A

Yes

I hope there are not Telephone polls

45
Q

Most accidents lead to litigation and the investigation continues where the NTSB ended…

A

Have all my liability insurance for USA flying, they don’t want to pay out so they will defend me and I don’t pay those legal costs.

45
Q

Cat A (i.e. my a/c) <91kts allows 1.3nm bubble around threshold with ___agl obstacle clearance at given minima.

A

300’
Always add 10% for HAT at 0 Deg C

Use Rwy itself to estimate my distance and vis.

45
Q

How to deal with the Faa…

A

File Nasa air safety report asap

Don’t write anything doww unless I have to, then write as little as possible…
‘Due to Severe Icing it was necessary to Declare an Emergency’
Sincerely…Your Name

46
Q

I can obtain ATC tapes within 15 days if I make a written request to the FAA chief counsel at the appropriate ‘Regional HQ’.

A

Will pay a small fee for the data…

Radar transponder tapes also available.

47
Q

True or false, in climb, cruise or descent a constant PA and Power will give constant performance?

A

True
