Waves: Uses of EM waves" Flashcards
What are the uses of radio waves?
- Transmit Radio and Terrestrial TV signals.
What are microwaves used for?
- Heating food
- Used to communicate with satellites in space.
What are infrared radiation used for?
- Emitted by electrical heaters
= used to cook food
= used in infrared cameras
What is visible light used for?
- Communication using fibre optics.
= telephone and cable tv signals
What is Ultra Violet used for?
- Energy efficient lightbulbs.
= sun tanning
What are the uses for X-rays and Gamma rays?
- Used for medical imaging.
- X-Rays: Visualise broken bones.
- Gamma Rays: detect cancer.
= medical treatment.
How are radio waves suitable for it’s purpose?
= travel long distances before being absorbed
= long wave length waves can spread out between hills
= reflect off layer of charged particles in atmosphere
= long distances around the earth
How are microwaves suitable for it’s purpose?
= water molecules absorb energy of microwaves- temp inc
= microwaves can pass through the earths atmosphere without being reflected or refracted
How are infrared waves suitable for it’s purpose?
= energy of infrared is easily absorbed by the surface of objects
How are visible light suitable for it’s purpose?
= short wavelength
= carry great deal of information
How are ultra-violet light suitable for it’s purpose?
= short wavelength
= carries more energy than visible light
= energy is absorbed by internal surfaces bulb and converted into visible light- less energy than normal
How are x-rays and gamma rays suitable for it’s purpose?
= very penetrative- easily pass through body tissue
= x-rays are absorbed by bones
=
