Waves: Properties of a EM wave. Flashcards
What happens when electromagentic waves are generated or absorbed?
- ## Changes take place in the atoms or the nuclei of the atoms.
What happens when you heat up an atom?
= causes electron to move to a higher energy level
= when moving to the original level
= emmits radioactive waves
-
What happens when electromagnetic waves are absorbed?
= changes to the atom
= can be emmited or absorbed over a wide frequency from radio waves to gamma rays.
What happens when there are changes to the nucleus?
E.g: Gamma Rays
= Gamma rays can be emmited from the nucleus of a radioactive atom
= nuclues has less energy that it originally started with
What are the dangers of UV light?
= skin cancer
= premature aging of skin
What are the dangers of x-rays and gamma rays?
= ionising- knock of electrons when absorbed
= mutation of genes
= risk of cancer
What does the damage caused by radiation depend on?
= dose- Sv
= type
How are radio waves produced?
1) Produced when electrons oscillate in electrical circuits.
2) Radio waves can be absorbed. (Aerials).
3) Causes electrons in circuit to oscillate.
4) Creates an alternating current with the same frequency as the radio waves.
