Radioactivity: Flashcards
1
Q
What is radioactive decay?
A
- Some isotopes have unstable nucleus’s.
- To become stable, the nucleus gives off radiation.
- ## Random process.
2
Q
What is the activity?
A
- Rate at which unstable nucleus’s decay.
- Measured in Bq.
- ## Measured using a Geiger-Muller Tube.
3
Q
What is the count rate?
A
Number of decays recorded each second by a detector.
-
4
Q
What is an alpha particle?
A
- Same as a helium nucleus.
-
5
Q
What is a beta particle?
A
- Electron ejected from the nucleus at a high speed.
- Formed inside of the nucleus when a nuetron changes into a proton and an electron.
6
Q
What are gamma rays?
A
- Type of electromagnetic radiation from the nucleus.
-
7
Q
What other radiation is given out by unstable nuclues sometimes?
A
- Nuetron.
