Waves: Transverse and Longitudinal Waves. Flashcards
1
Q
What do all waves do?
A
- Transfer energy from one place to another.
- The wave travels not the molecules..
2
Q
What are oscillations?
A
- Upwards and downwards motion of waves.
-
3
Q
What are Transverse waves?
A
- Oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer.
- Oscillations: Up and Down.
- Direction of energy transfer: Sideways.
- Not all transverse waves require a medium.
4
Q
What are longitudinal waves?
A
Consists:
- Compression: Stretched out region of the wave where the particles are close together.
- Rare fractions: Region in wave where the particles are furthest apart.
- Oscillations are parallel to the direction of energy transfer.
- Requires a medium to travel in.
