Forces: Forces and Braking. Flashcards
1
Q
How do we calculate kinetic energy?
A
- Ek= 1/2xmxv^2
Mass: Kg.
Velocity: m/s - Depends on Velocity squared.

2
Q
What happens to the kinetic energy when a car brakes?
A
- Kinetic energy is converted into other forms of energy.
- `
3
Q
What happens when the brakes are pressed?
A
- When brakes are pressed the force of friction acts between the wheels and the brake.
- Causes the kinetic energy of the car to be converted into the thermal energy of the brakes.
- The temperature of the brakes increases and the car slows down loosing it’s kinetic energu.
4
Q
The greater the speed the greater the what?
A
- Greater braking force needed to stop the car in a certain distance.
- Travelling in High Speeds: Apply large braking force + Causes car to deceelerate rapidly.
- Large amount of kinetic energy is being transferred into the thermal energy of the brakes.
- ## Causes brakes to overheat + Loose control of vehicle.
