Water balance Flashcards
What is dehydration ?
Excessive loss of body water, such that it interrupts the function of the body
What is hydration ?
Having enough water to enable more functioning of the body
What is rehydration ?
Consuming water to restore hydration
How do you define water balance ?
This refers to taking in wafer (hydrating) to prevent dehydration due to the loss of fluids.
What happens during water balance ?
When we swear during physical activity we lose water and salt. It is vital that the correct levels of these are maintained.
How can you avoid dehydration?
You need to drink plenty of water or energy drinks:
- two hours before performances
- just before performance
- whenever possible during performance
What impact does the THICKENING OF THE BLOOD (VISCOCITY) as a result of dehydration have on performance ?
Viscosity slows blood flow, therefore oxygen delivery, causing a lack of energy to continue a marathon.
What impact does the INCREASE IN HR CAUSING IRREGULAR HR as a result of dehydration have on performance ?
Irregular heart rate means the heart has to work harder to deliver oxygen to the muscles, causing a lack of energy to continue running a marathon
What impact does an increase in body temperature as a result of dehydration have on performance ?
A increase in body temperature causes ivermectin heating leading to heat exhaustion. For example,
you will have to stop playing netball for half a second
What does an INCREASE OF REACTION TIME as a result of dehydration have on performance ?
An increased reaction time makes it slower to make vital decisions and poorer decisions are made. For example,
a goal
shooter failing to save a shot on goal.
What impact does MUSCLE FATIGUE as a result of dehydration have on performance ?
Muscle fatigue causes cramp
