Engagement patterns are the general trend of different social groups’ participation in physical activities.

What are the factors affecting engagement patterns?

A

Familiarity: You may do the same activities as other members of your family, for example you play tennis because your mum plays tennis

Attitudes: You may not play badminton because, for example, your
friends don’t like it.

Family commitments: You may not take part in activities owing to, for example, having to look after your younger siblings.

A

Role models: lack of female role
models of female sports

Media coverage: lack of TV coverage of female sports

Stereotyping: Some girls do not want to play football, as they think other will think them to be masculine and men
don’t want to dance, as they think these activities are only for females.

A

Accessibility: Fir example, a low cal
tennis club may
only allow juniors to play at the weekend, and if they have a weekend part-time job this means they cannot play

Disposable income: Money may be needed to pay bills rather than to pay for sports

Available
leisure time: Some people may have less available leisure time owing to
work commitments.

Stereotyping: some people think you’re too old
to do
sport if you are retired;
however some
people
in their eighties still run marathons.

What factors affect race/religion/culture ?

A

Cultural differences: family or peers influencing whether someone does or does not do an activity

Religious festivals: that take precedence over playing sport

Stereotyping:
where people from particular backgrounds are steered towards or away from certain activities; for example, people of African orgin participate in long distance running instead of swimming events.

Disposable income: owing to socio-economic grouping, some porpen from minority groups may have less money; for example, someone without a permanent job would not have the money need to access many sports
