What is obesity ?
This term is used to describe people with a large fat content, caused by an imbalance of calories consumed compared to energy expenditure.
When is a person considered obese ?
A person is considered obese if they have a body mass index (BMI) of over 39, or over 20 per cent above standard weight for height ratio.
What does ill-health mean ?
This refers to being in a atarte of poor physical, mental and/or social well being.
How can obesity affect performance ?
- Limits cardiovascular endurance
- Limits flexibility
- Limits agility
- Limits speed/power
How does obesity limit cardiovascular endurance ?
Unable to exercise without stopping repeatedly for a long period of time, owing to the additional difficulty of carrying a lot of excess weight he, and drop of efficiency of the cardio-respiratory system.
How can obesity limit flexibility?
Excess fat around joints can reduce mobility
How can obesity limit agility ?
Excess weight makes it harder to change direction quickly
How can obesity limit speed/power ?
Unable to move fast owing to carrying excess weight.
How does obesity cause physical ill health ?
Excess fat has been linked to:
- different types of cancer
- type 2 diabetes
- heart disease/heart attacks
- high cholesterol levels
How can obesity cause mental ill health ?
Depression: due to low self-esteem
Loss of confidence: due to perception of what other might think.
How can obesity cause social ill heath?
Inability to socialise: due to loss of confidence, or being housebound
Inability to leave home: die to mobility issues and lack of confidence
