Water Flashcards
properties of water that help living organisms (5)
its a reactant (useful in hydrolysis reactions)
solvent (biological reactions can take place in it)
high specific heat capacity and latent heat of evaporation (can maintain a constant temp)
useful as a habitat
insulation as ice rises (also land)
is oxygen delta negative or delta positive
delta negative (many unshared electrons)
is hydrogen delta negative or delta positive?
delta positive (the electrons are shared)
why is water a polar molecule?
regions of both positivity and negativity
how is waters structure related to properties and functions? (3)
many hydrogen bonds give it a high specific heat capacity- helps to maintain temperature
H bonds also give a high latent heat of evaporation- uses a lot of energy for evaporation which makes it good for cooling down
polarity makes it cohesive (transpiration)
