Homeostasis Flashcards
ectotherm
reptiles and fish
cant control own body temp therefore rely on surroundings&environment
change their behaviour to control their body temp
endotherm
mammals and birds
can control own body temperature
rely on metabolic activity to control body temp and their behaviour
mechanisms used by mammals to INCREASE body temp (4)
shivering (muscles contract in spasms)
less sweat
hairs stand up (erector pili muscles contract)
vasoconstriction (arterioles near skin surface constrict to reduce heat loss as less blood flows through capillaries)
mechanisms used by mammals to REDUCE body temp (3)
sweating
hair lies flat to trap air and provide insulation
vasodilation (arterioles near skin surface dilate so more blood flows through capillaries and heat is lost through radiation)
