water Flashcards
polarity of aqua
a positive charge on the hydrogen side and negative on the oxygen side
water is a polar molecule bc:
- different charges at each end
- unequally shared electrons (one atom higher than the other)
3.open triangular shape
4.equally shared electrons create a covalent bond (neither of the atoms has a higher density of electrons than the other)
due to water polarity—->
hydrogen bonding occurs between water molecules
the hydrogen bond works on the fact that hydrogen has 1 electron
structure of water
only water has vacuums (low density)
solid floats in liquid (ice floats in water)
all life is at the bottom of water body (preserves life)
whaaat is cohesion of water mollecules
attraction between two water mollecules
water molecules are highly cohesive and able to influence each other (theyre all just a bunch of whores)
why does water have surface tension
-ephemeral hydrogen bonding
-the layer of water molecules in water does not have them above (no molecules are pulling upwards, just around and below them)
in order for an object ti pass (like through water)
the surface tension must be broken
what does water do in plants
—-> in order to bring water to leaves (upwards) the water which evaporates through stoma has cohesion to water in xylem tube
—-> the polarity of water brings the water column towards low-pressure point (in the leaf and xylem tube)
water adhesion
force of attraction that sticks two different molecules//substances
I N T R A M O L E C U L A R intramolecular
effect: capillary action and meniscus
water cohesion
force of attraction that sticks two of the same molecules/substances
I N T E R M O L E C U L A R intermolecular
effect: capillary action, surface tension, meniscus
adhesion between water + other polar substances
> results of polarity
attraction between 2 molecules
keeps water column from dropping
the solvent properties of water
the functions of molecules depend on them being HYDROPHOBIC or HYDROPHILIC
HYDROPHILIC MOLECULES
> dissolves readily in water
> cytoplasm (containing variety of water (soluble substance) ex: glucose, ions, proteins, amino acids
*> aqueous solution
-water is an excellent medium for transporting dissolved hydrophilic substances
(blood)
aqueous solution
water that contains one more more dissolved substance ie blood
hydrophobic molecules
> doesn’t dissolve easily in water
> ex: steroids, hormones (testosterone)are able to pass through the plasma membrane and nuclear membrane (can pass through the hydrophobic layers of the cell membrane)
