W20-L7: Pain Flashcards
What is the difference in response to noxious heat in hairy and glabrous skin?
Hairy skin: Has type II A (sharp) and C fibres (slow, burning)
Glabrous skin: Has only C fibres
What is the response to nociceptive pain?
Autonomic response, withdrawal reflex
How is inflammatory pain perceived?
Spontaneous pain that causes pain hypersensitivity
What is hyperalgesia?
An increased response to a normally painful stimulus
What is allodynia?
A painful response to a normally innocuous stimulus
What is secondary hyperalgesia?
When a sustained noxious stimulus causes other levels of the spinal cord to become sensitised so pain spreads
What are the two types of maladaptive pain?
Neuropathic pain and dysfunctional pain
What is neuropathic pain?
When there is a neural lesion, produces positive and negative symptoms
What is maladaptive pain?
When there is a low threshold for pain
What is dysfunctional pain?
When there is no neural lesion, no inflammation and only positive symptoms
What are the cortical areas involved in Top-down psychological modulation of pain?
Anterior cingulate, prefrontal cortex, insula
T/F Pain is always subjective
True
T/F size of an injury can be a good guide as to how much pain someone is in
False, The relationship between tissue damage and pain is variable
