Vocabulary Flashcards
Matter
is anything that has mass and takes up space (volume). is either a mixture or it is a pure substance.
Density
is the amount of matter in a given volume.
2 kinds of mixtrues
Homogeneous mixtures (the same throughout; solutions) & Heterogeneous mixtures (different throughout).
2 kinds of pure substances
Elements (made of only one type of atom)
Compounds (made of two or more elements chemically combined)
Physical properties
can be observed or measured without changing the composition of matter
Density
The mass of a substance per unit volume.
Melting point
The temperature at which a solid becomes a liquid.
Color
The visual appearance of a substance
Hardness
Resistance of a material to scratching or indentation.
Boiling point
The temperature at which a liquid turns into a gas.
Chemical properties
are any of the properties of matter that may only be observed and measured by performing a chemical change or chemical reaction. cannot be determined by touching or viewing a sample; the structure of the sample must be altered for the chemical properties to become apparent.
Flammability
The ability of a substance to burn.
Corrosiveness
The tendency of a substance to cause corrosion or deterioration of materials
Reactivity
How a substance interacts with other substances to form new compounds
Toxicity
The harmful effects of a substance on living organisms.
