Characteristics of life Flashcards
Chemical unqieness
the macromolecules that make up living
organisms are far more intricate and complex that their non-living
counterparts.
Cellular composition
All living things are made up of cells
Response to stimuli
living organisms react to both internal and
external stimuli.
Growth and development
Growth is defined as an increase in mass.
Nutrition
organisms feed by taking in and assimilating materials for
growth and maintenance, while other make their own food
Reproduction
this involves the replication of genetic materials that are
passes on to the next generation
Releases of energy
is necessary to stay alive. This enables
organisms to perform necessary activities that will sustain life
Excretion
is the process by which the organism eliminates toxic
wastes products
Adaptation
refers to inherited changes that occur over time and help
the species survive.
Homeostasis
All organisms stabilize the internal conditions of their
body through a process called homeostasis.
