Animal From/Function - Circulatory system Flashcards
Why do large organisms require a transport system?
To distribute nutrients and oxygen and to remove wastes and CO2 from cells
distributed throughout the body
2 kinds of circulatory system
Open and closed CS
an oxygen- and nutrient-carrying fluid
Hemolymph
Open circulatory systems pump blood into an internal cavity called
Hemocoel
The hemolymph returns to the
pumping mechanism of the system, a heart, through holes called
Astia
vessels moving away from the heart are called
Arteries
Where in closed CS is blood confined?
To the vessels
Arteries branch
into smaller vessels
Arterioles
Smallest vessels
Capillaries
De-oxed blood remains in the capillaries and returns to the heart through this which merge to form larger veins
Venules
4 chambers of the heart
Right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, left ventricle
