Population
A group of interbreeding individuals of the same species
Population size
The number of individuals in a population (number of individuals in particular area at particular times)
Population density
Number of organisms in a given area
Population distribution
How individuals are spread out, three patterns (random, clumped, uniform), most live in clumps
Age structure
Distribution of individuals among various age groups (categories)
(Prereproductive, reproductive, postreproductive)
Exponential growth
The increase in size at a constantly growing rate, continually multiplying
Logistical growth
A rapid increase that isn’t sustainable so it levels off
Carrying capacity
The maximum number of individuals in a population that the environment can support
Total fertility rate
The average number of children born to a woman during her lifetime
Replacement level
The average number of children a couple must bear to replace themselves in the population
Infant mortality rate
The number of babies out of every 1,000 births that die before reaching their first birthday
Crude birth rate
The number of live births per 1,000 people in a population in a given year
Crude death rate
The number of deaths per 1,000 people in a population in a given year
Immigration
The migration of people INTO a population
Emigration
The migration of people OUT of a population
