VO2 and VO2max Flashcards
1
Q
VO2 (oxygen consumption)
A
measure of the volume of oxygen that is used by your body to convert the energy from food to ATP
2
Q
VO2max
A
measure of the maximum volume of oxygen that an athlete can use
3
Q
Factors impacting VO2max (5)
A
genetics age training status gender body comp.
4
Q
Discussion of VO2 and VO2max
A
- they do not inhale and expire the same amount of air
- have more oxygen deficit in the beginning of exercise because it’s more difficult to reach steady state
- low VO2max level is most likely cardiac patient, high level is most likely athlete
5
Q
Fuel usage at rest and during the rest-to-exercise transition
A
- ATP production increases immediately (ATP-PCr)
- O2 uptake increases rapidly (steady state is reached within 1-4 minutes)
- Delay in O2 uptake at beginning of exercise (O2 deficit)
- Once SS reached, ATP is met through aerobic ATP production (oxidation, fat metabolism)
