Describe ATP (Section 2) Flashcards
1
Q
ATP
A
Made of Adenine (nitrogenous base), Ribose (sugar), and 3 inorganic phosphates (stores potential energy from food). ATP loses endmost phosphate molecule (releasing usable energy) when broken down by ATPase (enzyme), resulting in 2-phosphates (P-P bond) and creating adenosinediphosphate (ADP). The lost phosphate is replaced with hydroxide (OH) from surrounding H2O. This is all done through hydrolysis
3 oz. ATP yields about 4-8 seconds of energy
