Vitamin Deficiencies Flashcards
Night blindness, dry skin
Vitamin A
Beriberi (polyneuritis, dilated cardiomyopathy, high-output CHF, edema), Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome
Vitamine B1 (Thiamine)
Angular stomatitis, cheilosis, corneal vascularization
Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)
Diarrhea, dermatitis, dementia
Vitamin B3 (Niacin) (Pellagra)
Dermatitis, enteritis, alopecia, adrenal insufficiency
Vitamin B5 (Pantothenate)
Convulsions, hyperirritability; required during administration of isoniazid
Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine)
Macrocytic, megaloblastic anemia; neurologic symptoms (i.e. optic neuropathy, subacute combined degeneration, paresthesias); glossitis
Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin)
Swollen gums, bruising, anemia, poor wound healing
Vitamin C
Scurvy
Bending bones in kids; soft bones in adults; hypocalcemic tetany
Vitamin D
Rickets, osteomalacia
Increased fragility of red blood cells
Vitamin E
Neonatal hemorrhage; increased PT and aPTT, normal bleeding time
Vitamin K
Dermatitis, enteritis. Can be caused by ingestion of raw eggs or antibiotic use
Biotin
Sprue; macrocytic, megaloblastic anemia without neurologic symptoms
Folic acid (The most common vitamin deficiency in the USA.)
Weakness, muscle cramps, exacerbation of hypocalcemic tetany, CNS hyperirritability leading to tremors, choreoathetoid movement
Magnesium
Dilated cardiomyopathy, myocardial necrosis; exacerbated by concurrent coxsackievirus infection.
Atrophy, degeneration, necrosis of cartilage tissue; exacerbated by iodine deficiency.
Selenium
Keshan disease; Kashin-Beck disease
