Visual pathway Flashcards
What is the visual field?
Everything you see with one eye
Where do all fibres from the eye pass?
Through the optic nerve to the optic chiasma
What happens to fibres at the optic chiasma?
Nasal fibres cross to the other side
What does the optic tract contain?
Fibres from the temporal hall of the ipsilateral side and nasal fibres from the contralateral side
Where do fibres from the optic tract synapse?
Lateral geniculate body of the thalamus
What happens to optic fibres after they synapse?
Optic radiation passes behind the internal capsule to reach the primary visual cortex
Where is the primary visual cortex?
Occipital lobe
What fibres cross to the other side of the cortex?
Nasal fibres
What happens if there is optic nerve damage?
Blindness in the ipsilateral eye
What happens if the optic chiasma is disrupted in the middle?
Bitemporal hemianopia
What happens if the optic tract is damaged?
Contralateral homonymous hemianopia
What happens if the optic radiation is damaged?
Contralateral homonymous hemianopia
