Pathology of cerebro-vascular disease Flashcards
What are the segments that the middle cerebral arteries branch to form?
Cortical segments
Sylvian segments
Horizont segment
Lateral lenticulostriate arteries
What does the anterior cerebral artery supply?
Frontal and medial parietal lobes
What does the middle cerebral artery supply?
Lateral parietal and temporal lobes
What does the posterior cerebral artery supply?
Occipital and inferior temporal lobes
Where do sinuses drain?
Superior sagittal sinus and straight sinus drain to the transverse sinus, then sigmoid sinus then jugular vein
What are sinuses sin the brain fed by?
Bridging veins
What is the function of emissary veins?
Link veins outside the skull
What is a stroke?
Focal neurological deficit due to disruption of the blood supply
What is a neurological deficit?
Loss of function affecting specific region of CNS
What are the major features of a stroke?
Focal neurological deficit
Confusion, difficulty speaking/understanding speech
Difficulty seeing
Difficulty walking, dizziness, balance/coordination loss
Severe headache with no known cause
Unconciousness
What can cause an interruption in blood supply?
Vessel wall
Blood flow and pressure
Blood constituents
What problems wth the vessel wall can cause an interruption in the blood supply?
Abnormality of wall
Outside pressure
What problems with the blood constituents can cause interruption in the blood supply?
Thrombosis of arteries
Bleeding due to anticoagulation, reduced platelets and clotting factors
What are the main causes of stroke?
Atheroma and thrombosis causing ischaemia
Thromboemolism causing ischaemia
Ruptured aneurysm causing haemorrhage
What are the major categories of cerebra-vascular event?
Transient ischaemic attack
Minor stroke
Disabling stroke
