Visual pathway Flashcards
What are two stages in visual pathway?
Extracranial
Intracranial
Outline visual pathway?
Extracranial
1) Optic nerve made axons from retinal ganglion cells
2) Retinal ganglion cells recieve impulse rods and cones
3) Optic nerve leaves via optic canal through sphenoid bone
4) Enter cranial cavity
5) Run along cranial fossa
Intracranial
1) Optic nerves join at optic chiasm
2) At chiasm fibres from:
medial halves- cross to contralateral optic tract
lateral halves- ipsilateral
3) Optic tracts travel to lateral geniculate nucleus in
thalamus
4) Fibres synapse
What recieves impulses from rods and cones?
Optic nerve
Formed retinal ganglion cells
Where do fibres meet?
Optic chiasm
At chiasm what occurs to fibres?
Medial- cross to contralateral optic tract
Lateral- remain ipsilateral
Where do fibres synapse?
Lateral geniculate nucleus
Function of lateral geniculate nucleus?
Site where fibres synapse
How do axons from LGN carry visual info?
Via optic radiation
What is optic radiation divided into?
Upper optic radiation
Lower optic radiation
Function upper optic radiation?
Where do fibres travel?
Carry fibres from superior quadrant (Baumans)
Fibres travel through parietal lobe to visual cortex
Function lower optic radiation?
Where do fibres travel?
Carry fibres from inferior quadrants
Fibres travel through temporal lobe to visual cortex
NB: Superior retinal quadrants correspond to inferior visual field quadrants and inferior retinal quadrants correspond to superior visual field quadrants
NB: Superior retinal quadrants correspond to inferior visual field quadrants and inferior retinal quadrants correspond to superior visual field quadrants
Define intortion?
Internal rotation
Toward midline
Define extortion?
External rotation
Away midline
State 6 ocular muscles?
Medial rectus- occ mot
Lateral rectus- abducens
Superior oblique- troch
Inferior oblique- occ mot
Superior rectus- occ mot
Inferior rectus- occ mot
Label and state function?
What movements muscle of eye responsible?
Label
