Medulla oblongata Flashcards
What forms brainstem?
Midbrain
Pons
Medulla
What is the medulla continuous with?
Spinal cord
Where does the medulla exit?
Foramen magnum
What fissures present on medulla? (3)
Anterior median fissure
Ventrolateral sulcus
Posteriolateral sulcus
What nerve is present at junction between pons and medulla?
CNVI- abducens
What nerves present ventrolateral sulcus?
CN XII- hypoglossal
What nerves present in posterolateral sulcus?
CN IX, CN X, and CN XI
What is main lvl of decussation?
Medulla
75% motor fibres
Label
What does outer portion of medulla contain?
Fasiculus gracilis
Fasiculus cuneatus (white matter)
What is function of medulla?
1) Responsible for autonomic functions e.g vomit
2) Control of ventilation- signals from the carotid and aortic bodies
3) BP- baroreceptors
Where are carotid and aortic bodies found?
Medulla oblongata
How is respiration controlled by medulla?
1) Respiration regulated by groups chemoreceptors
2) Sense direct changes in blood acidity
3) Signals sent to intercostal and phrenic muscles
4) Contraction rate changed
