Motor control Flashcards
What connects muscle to bone?
Tendon
What does motor unit contain?
Alpha motor neurons and all extrafusal skeletal muscle fibres it innervates
Function of upper motor neuron?
Cell body?
Innervate muscle
Cell body originates in cerebral cortex or brainstem
Terminates within brainstem or spinal cord
All UMNs exert effects via LMNs
What neurotransmitter normally involved in upper motor neurons?
Glutamate
What does damage to UPM cause?
Weakness/paralysis of movement for group of muscles it innervates
Give 3 signs of UMN damage?
Hypertonia- toned due to muscle loss
Spasticity
Stroke (internal capsule)
Function of lower motor neuron?
Connects the UMN and skeletal muscle it innervates
Can a single LMN innervate one or several muscle fibres?
Single LMN can innervate several muscle fibres
Single muscle fibres is innervated by only one LMN
What are two types of LMN?
α-Motor Neurons
γ-Motor Neurons
Function of α-Motor Neurons?
Cause contraction of muscle fibres
Voluntary
Stretch response
Function y-motor neurons?
Regulate muscle tone
Maintain nonconscious proprioception
Signs of LMN damage?
Hypotonia
Muscle atrophy
Define muscle tone?
Degree of contraction of muscle or proportion of motor units that are active at any one time
Characteristics of muscle in high tone?
Firm/rigid
Characteristics muscle in low tone?
Soft
