What is AIDS?
Sexually transmitted disease caused disease caused by a virus known as Human Immunodeficiency Virus(HIV)
What does the virus infect?
Cells of the human immune system known as CD4-cells
Effects on the human body
1) HI-virus multiples and destroys the CD4-cells,, CD4-count decreases
2) During the first phase, infected person shows few or no symptoms
3) Flu symptoms can occur
Other symptoms of hiv&aids that effects the human body
1) Repeated cold sores infections
2) Skin Infections
3) prolonged fever
4) night sweats
5) chronic diarrhoea
6) opportunistic infections
Examples of opportunistic infections
1) respiratory infections
2) pneumonia
3) rare skin cancer
4) lymph cancer
5) peripheral neuropathy
6) tuberculosis (TB)
Effects on children and families
1) Breadwinner becomes sick or dies, which leaves the family without income.
2) When both parents die, children become the responsibility of their relatives
3) These children are often removed from their environment and separated from their siblings
Effects on SA’s economy
1) due to the loss of young adults, the labour force is drastically reduced
2) AIDS is different from other diseases in that it affects people in their most productive years
3) the mining industry has a high rate of HIV infection in its workforce
treatment of HIV
No cure for HIV/AIDS
Treatment is based on keeping the viral load low and increasing the CD4 count.
Antiretroviral drugs.
Strengthening the immune system.
Treatment of common and opportunistic infections
Preevntion of HIV/AIDS
avoid sexual intercourse
have one faithful, long-term, HIV-negative partner
practice protected safe sex
treat other sexually transmitted diseases
avoid direct contact with blood
avoid alcohol and drug abuse
